Scuba-diving therapy promotes self-confidence, independence for
wounded troops

Staff Sgt. Todd Shaw participates in scuba-diving based therapy with
the Underwater Warriors Program at Gardner Pool April 19.
Early morning physical training was what Staff Sgt. Todd Shaw loved
about his job as a Soldier.

While he was deployed to Iraq in September 2005, an improvised
explosive device blast left Shaw incapable of doing what he loved.

“I was one of the ‘old guys,’ so I had to show [the younger] Soldiers
what I could do during PT,” said Shaw, who enlisted at the age of 32.

The blast left Shaw with a broken back. But it wasn’t until eight
months after the IED attack that he was medically evacuated from
Iraq.

“After the attack, I had pains in my back, but I didn’t think anything
of it. I continued to run missions.” Shaw said. “Being infantry, we go
until we can’t walk. That is basically when I got evacuated, when I
couldn’t walk anymore.”

Shaw began attending the wounded warrior support group on post at
the Fisher House every Thursday. During the meetings is when he met
a woman who proposed a fun, innovative idea to help him in his long
road to recovery. Nancy MacPherson told Shaw of scuba-diving based
therapy that has helped many wounded Soldiers by promoting “self-
confidence and independence” after suffering from an injury.

Based out of Fort Campbell, the Underwater Warriors Foundation is
the first military, non-profit program to offer free scuba to severely
injured Soldiers as therapy. MacPherson is the executive director and
co-founder of the program.

MacPherson, professional diving instructor, is enthusiastic about seeing
the potential of her underwater dive therapy, and she said she is
always excited when a new Soldier, like Shaw, joins the team.

“When I see it working and I see a smile on their faces that they
didn’t have when they came in and might not have had since their
injury, it is a wonderful feeling,” MacPherson said.”

MacPherson recruits the wounded Soldiers through the wounded
warriors support group. She carefully screens each Soldier by
coordinating with his case manager and his physician to see if he is
eligible to dive.

Soldiers wanting to join the program must start out by attending a
Discover Scuba class.

“Discover Scuba is not an official class,” MacPherson said. “They learn
the rules of diving, and it is a chance for us to see if they want to
commit to the Underwater Warriors.”

April 19 was Shaw’s first time to suit up in diving gear as part of the
Discover Scuba program at Gardner Pool on post.

“I thought it would be fun, and now that I am doing it, it is a blast,”
Shaw said. “I can’t do have the stuff I used to do. All I can do now
for PT is swimming, and this actually brings a whole new level of
swimming. Just getting out and getting physical activity is a great
part of the program.”

Underwater Warriors instructor, Warrant Officer Cory Reeves, 7th
Squadron, 17th Calvary Regiment, said being in the water is
therapeutic for an injured Soldier.

“The water is therapeutic as it is, it takes a lot of the weight off,
and injured Soldiers can move more freely,” Reeves said. “Shaw is a
classic example to be able to move without hurting. Todd made me
look like a good instructor because he was picking it up so quickly. It’s
a lot of fun, and everyone should try it at least once.”

So far, Macpherson has trained 16 wounded Soldiers to become scuba
certified, and Shaw said he will soon become an official Underwater
Warrior.

“I loved it,” Shaw said. “I will definitely be a part of the team.”
