| LETTER FROM 1SG MARK STUART AT FORT CAMPBELL'S WTU I am writing the letter to give out some information and lay to rest some rumors about the Warrior Transition Battalion. The mission of the Warrior Transition Battalion is to assist Wounded Warriors and their Family members' transition from their war fighting units to where ever the Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) decides they should be. The board can decide one of three things: either return the Soldier to his unit to continue, or have the soldier change their MOS with continued service to the Army, or Soldier is no longer able to continue service with the Army. The WTUs mission is to assist the Soldier in monitoring their medical care, ensuring their appointments are in a timely manner and that all aspects of their life are as smooth as possible. This includes personal issues. The WTU is NOT here to move Soldiers along through the system as fast as possible so the Army won't have to deal with them. No Soldier will be separated from the Army before their medical treatment is complete. We are not here to ensure the Soldier gets as little as possible. The Army prepares Soldiers in every way to deploy and fight. The Warrior Transition Battalion is here to prepare Soldiers for their next mission, even if it’s to the civilian sector. We afford Warriors every opportunity to attend college courses, attend all ACAP workshops, job fairs and resume workshops. We ensure they are well briefed by the Department of Vets Affairs to ensure they know what their benefits are and begin working through that maze of paperwork. We also attempt to find our Warriors volunteer jobs on the installation that is appropriate for whatever they think they will like to do when they transition out of the Army. Warriors will conduct physical training twice a week within the limits of their injuries. These PT program was developed by the Physical Therapy clinic and will be constantly monitored. Our goal is to insure Warriors are prepared for the next phase of their lives whether that is back to the war fighting force, into another duty position within the Army, or to the civilian sector. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to how Soldiers become part of the Warrior Transition Battalion. Immediately after a Soldier receives a Permanent Profile 3, commonly referred to as a P3, their Physicians Assistant (PA) forwards the profile to the Brigade Surgeon. The Brigade Surgeon forwards all appropriate documentation to the Division Surgeon as a nomination to the WTU. The Division Surgeon has a standardized packet for the nomination. When that packet is complete (with paperwork from the Soldiers unit, PA, Battalion and Brigade Commander) it is forwarded to the WTU for final approval. This should normally, and I say normally, take approximately three to four weeks. Sometimes longer. Only when this is complete can a Soldier become part of the WTU. There are exceptions to this as well. Normally as Soldier that is already into the MEB process and has passed their dictation, they are not a candidate to come to WTU because they are so close to completing the process that moving them would not be beneficial. A Soldier that is injured and will undergo medical treatment for longer than six months is a candidate to be in WTU. There are a million different things that can go into this. I hope that I have provided you information that is helpful. Unfortunately there isn't enough time or room to cover everything. Please see your Battalion PA for all questions, they know the process well. 1SG Stuart B Btry, Warrior Transition Battalion Classification: UNCLASSIFIED |
